The annual PLEN Mentor Awards honor leaders who have a proven commitment to training the next generation of public policy leaders. Each year, PLEN alumni, students, speakers, and supporters join us to support the amazing work of leaders who are making huge strides in the public policy arena while also helping those coming up the ladder behind them.

2024 honorees

Community Award

Meredith G. Singer

Meredith Singer is a corporate government affairs executive with more than 25 years of experience in her field.  Most recently, she served as vice president and the head of U.S. Federal Government Affairs for HP Inc. There, she led a team that was responsible for managing the company’s federal advocacy priorities across a range of topics, including semiconductor research and manufacturing, federal government procurement, supply chain resiliency, tax, trade, environmental sustainability, privacy, diversity, and many other areas. Meredith has a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.A. in East Asian Studies from The George Washington University. She also is an internationally certified Les Mills™ BODYPUMP instructor and is group fitness certified.

Jalisa Whitley

Jalisa Whitley is the Founder and Principal Consultant of Unbound Impact, a consulting firm that collaborates with nonprofits, philanthropic entities, and socially-responsible corporations to create spaces, processes and programs that advance racial equity and propel transformative change. With more than 13 years of experience working and serving in the nonprofit community, Jalisa's clients and partners represent a range of fields, including philanthropy, health, education, and racial equity. Jalisa received a BA in Public Policy and Sociology from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and a Master’s in Public Policy with a focus in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Former Rep. Nan A. S. Hayworth (R, NY19)

The Honorable Nan Hayworth, M.D., is the first female physician ever elected to a full term as a Member of the House of Representatives, serving the 19th District of New York in the 112th Congress.

A board-certified ophthalmologist, Nan practiced for nearly 20 years in Mount Kisco, New York, before becoming a vice president and medical director at Cline Davis & Mann, a division of Omnicom, from 2007 to 2009. She’s now a Strategic Business Development Advisor for Pilot Growth Equity (San Francisco, CA) and she is a past member of the board of directors of HealthEC (Piscataway, NJ). 

Nan chairs the board of directors of ConservAmerica, promoting economically-sustainable conservation and environmental protection; she is a member of the boards of the Independent Women’s Forum, the Goodman Institute for Public Policy Research, and Public Agenda; she is a past board member of the United Way of Westchester and Putnam. Nan was honored to be made a member of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition in 2017, and she presented the U.S. delegation’s intervention on Sports for Development and Peace to the UNGA in December, 2020.

Rep. Yvette D. Clarke (D, NY9)

As the Representative of the Ninth Congressional District of New York, Congresswoman Clarke has dedicated herself to continuing the legacy of excellence established by the late Honorable Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman and Caribbean American elected to Congress. In the 117th Congress, Congresswoman Clarke introduced landmark legislation, which passed in the House, the Dream and Promise Act (H.R. 6). This legislation would give 2.5 million DREAMers, temporary protected status, and deferred enforcement departure recipients a clear citizenship pathway.

Rep. Clarke co-chairs the Congressional Caribbean Caucus and works to foster relationships between the United States and the Caribbean Community. Clarke is a Senior Member of both the House Energy and Commerce Committee and House Committee on Homeland Security. She has been a member of the Congressional Black Caucus since coming to Congress in 2007 and today chairs its Immigration Task Force.
