Seminar: Women & Public Policy (2004)
Occupation: Law Clerk, Garvey Schubert Barer; Former Obama Administration Political Appointee
Education: Master of Public Affairs (MPA), Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University; BA in Economics, Newcomb College Institute of Tulane University (PLEN member)
When pursuing her undergraduate degree from Newcomb College Institute at Tulane University, Amy Lin traveled to Washington D.C. to learn more about careers in public policy. She described PLEN as a “one week crash course on careers with the federal government, agencies and on the Hill.” For Amy, the PLEN experience was a way to learn about career building, networking, and the importance of a mentor—exposure she would not have gotten anywhere else.
After graduating from Tulane, Amy moved to D.C. to serve as a staff assistant for the chief economist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. She then served as the development coordinator for the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, a non-profit think tank that informs policy and programs that affect women. She later served as staff and legislative assistant in Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s Labor Policy Office.
After earning her Master in Public Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, Amy returned to D.C. to get back into public service. Amy is currently the deputy policy and organizing director at Young Invincibles, an organization that focuses on issues of economic opportunity for young adults, ages 18-34, including higher education, jobs and economy, healthcare, and entrepreneurship.
As a PLEN alumna, Amy has come to understand one of the most rewarding aspects of PLEN- mentorship. “It is important understand what you can offer to the students and seeing how that can come full circle.” Amy’s PLEN experience has indeed come full circle, as she continues to support incoming PLEN students on their professional development and career path.
