Don’t Take it Personally:  Learning to Manage Competition in Your Career and Life”

Led by Kathryn C. Mayer

April 24, 2012

7:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. EST

This program explores individual views on competition and risk taking and proposes a new view of leadership for women:  Collaborative Competition™.  This program includes an individual assessment of views around competition, perfectionism, and collaboration at work.  Building a track record of being a self-challenger and risk taker is critical to becoming an effective leader.  However, taking risks can be a challenge – especially for women.  According to the current research on gender and leadership, women tend to take more of a perfectionist and relationship oriented approach to leadership.  Smart risk taking comes from understanding the four zones of performance:  blah, comfort, stretch, and yikes; and learning how to thrive in the stretch zone.  The stretch zone is characterized by trying new behaviors that energize and allow growth without causing a “breakdown” response or significantly diminishing your effectiveness.  The goal of this session is to increase self-awareness of each woman’s approach to competition and risk taking and learn specific steps to increase comfort in taking smart career risks.
